‘Shakuntala Devi’ movie review- Vidya Balan will win hearts as a math genius
The childhood, youth, old age of Shakuntala Devi has been included in the journey from the year 1934 to 2000. Her journey had started in just five years, when she used to solve even the biggest questions of mathematics by mouth. She wanted to go to school, but her unemployed father started organizing Shakuntala’s talent shows. The family started getting money and Shakuntala Devi got fame in the whole city.. then in the country and then all over the world. Shakuntala Devi’s fearless nature and independent thought kept her away from the family. There was anger especially towards the mother because she spent her life bearing the wrong ways of her father.
Here Shakuntala Devi’s relationship with the numbers deepened every day. His name was inscribed in the Guinness Book of World Records as a person who solved math problems faster than a computer. After which the world started knowing him as ‘Human Computer’. But as easily as she could solve maths problems, her personal life was more complicated. He did not understand to be ‘normal’. He believed that the only difference between humans and pandas is that humans cannot stay in one place, while trees are clinging to the roots. Due to this theory, he was not able to get that love, respect from his daughter in personal life. There is a constant conflict within them – between principles, duties and aspirations. From which how she recovers, it is shown in the film.
Vidya Balan has settled in the role of Shakuntala Devi. She has gripped the character so tightly from beginning to end that along with your eyes, she keeps your thoughts tied. Anger in one moment, laughter in another moment.. Vidya’s expressions enthrall the audience. From youth to adulthood, he has presented every age with ease. Jisshu Sengupta as Shakuntala Devi’s husband wins hearts with his simplicity and ease. At the same time, Sanya Malhotra is good in the role of daughter. Emotions, love, anger, impulses going on in the daughter’s mind.. Sanya has shown every emotion very well. Amit Sadh and Sanya pair well. Amit Sadh attracts attention with his excellent performance even in a small role.
Direction and technical side
Making a biopic is not easy. But director Anu Menon has been able to accurately portray the life of Shakuntala Devi on screen. Although at some places the story seems to be running, perhaps it has been done in an attempt to sum up all his achievements. His inclination towards politics and astrology could have been included a little more, as some questions remain about that part. The story of the film revolves between the past and the present. But don’t confuse you. Shakuntala’s relationship with her mother and then with her daughter brings emotional turmoil. The story is told in many layers, and each layer brings with it a pool of new emotions.
Antara Lahiri’s editing makes the film effective in some parts. At the same time, Ishita Moitra has written the dialogues, which are tremendous. In one scene, Shankutala Devi tells her angry daughter, ‘I probably always saw my mother as a mother, not as a woman.’ The film is full of interesting dialogues.
The music of the film is composed by Sachin-Jigar, which keeps on moving forward with the story. The lyrics are written by Vayu and Priya Saraiya. There are total 4 songs in the film. There is a zest in the songs. But after the film is over, he is unable to remain effective.
what’s good, what’s bad
There comes a time while watching a movie, when you forget that you are watching a biopic. Rather, you are interested in the film because of Vidya Balan and her strong acting. Hence, the acting takes the place above the story. Especially the biopic of a world famous mathematician could have been saved.
see or not see
This interesting journey of Shakuntala Devi is inspirational. Rarely have you seen such a wonderful talent in the world. Apart from talent, his aspiration and fearless nature teaches a lot.
At the same time, the film ‘Shakuntala Devi’ must be seen for Vidya Balan’s unmatched performance. It would not be wrong to say that Vidya sets a new benchmark of acting with every film she makes.
